How to work out in Tokyo โ from understanding gym etiquette to finding foreigner-friendly facilities.
Japan
Tokyo's fitness scene is a fascinating blend of cutting-edge gym technology, traditional martial arts dojos, and 24/7 convenience. The city is more expensive than Southeast Asia but offers uniquely Japanese fitness experiences you won't find anywhere else.

Bunkyo
๐ก Bring your passport and a white judogi (or rent one for ยฅ500). The international class at 16:00 is specifically for foreign visitors. A once-in-a-lifetime experience even if you've never done judo.
Yoyogi
๐ก Check their schedule for English-language classes โ usually 2-3 per week. Combine with a morning run in Yoyogi Park for the perfect Tokyo fitness morning.
Akihabara
๐ก Shoe rental is ยฅ400. The staff may not speak much English but there's an English guide sheet. Combine with an Akihabara exploration afterward for peak Tokyo vibes.
Harajuku
๐ก Show your passport for the visitor day pass. The sauna is excellent. Equipment etiquette is strict โ always wipe machines and re-rack weights. No phone calls on the gym floor.
Shinjuku
๐ก First-time visitors get a trial class for ยฅ500 โ incredible deal. Note that some classes are women-only (check the schedule). Limited English but the movements are universal.
Shibuya
๐ก If you have an Anytime Fitness membership from another country, you get free access after 30 days of membership. Japan locations are smaller than Western ones but immaculately maintained.
Roppongi
๐ก Sign-up requires a Japanese phone number โ get a cheap SIM at the airport or use a friend's number. The late-night hours (22:00-6:00) are very quiet and great for focused training.
Itabashi
๐ก Email ahead to confirm drop-in availability โ they're accommodating but like to know in advance. The noon BJJ class is more beginner-friendly. Bow when entering and leaving the mats.
Roppongi
๐ก Book via their app at least 4 hours ahead โ Japanese gyms are strict about scheduling. The 6:30 AM class is mostly expats and very English-friendly.
Minato
๐ก Contact them via Instagram DM before showing up โ they prefer to know drop-ins are coming. The Saturday class has a more social vibe with post-WOD coffee.
Shibuya
๐ก The group classes are excellent but conducted in Japanese. The functional training area is available for open gym time between class slots โ that's when to go as a drop-in.
Chiyoda
๐ก You MUST wear a swim cap โ no exceptions. Buy one at any convenience store. No tattoos allowed (this is enforced). ยฅ500 for a pool session is a steal for Tokyo.
Chiyoda
๐ก Run counter-clockwise โ that's the convention. There are coin-operated shower facilities (ใฉใณในใ) near some metro exits. The Jimbocho RunBase station offers locker + shower for ยฅ800.
Shibuya
๐ก The 3.3km perimeter loop is perfect for intervals. Weekend mornings you'll see martial arts groups, dance crews, and fitness classes โ feel free to join. Cherry blossom season (late March) is magical for outdoor training.
